Our story

HELLO!

Hi my name is Olivia, I set up Green Garms in November 2019, it operates as a sustainable second hand garment and accessory company based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, UK. A notion of feeling powerless and wanting to make a change is what inspired me to set up Green Garms. I have always been a passionate environmentalist and a big fashion enthusiast, becoming aware of Fast Fashion and the unethical produce of the textile industry, opened my eyes to the devastating environmental and social effects of the clothing I was purchasing. This realisation made me asses the rate at which clothing is consumed and what I could do to contain/minimise the issue, which lead to the creation of Green Garms.

THE ISSUE

Our declining world.

The natural world is in crisis, everyday more and more worrying issues emerge, from rising sea levels to blazing fires, animal extinction and drastic biodiversity decline.

Disturbingly the composition of our modern economy has created unconscious consumers, we live in a society which is addicted to new clothes, new trends and new gadgets. We discard the old for the new and continue to consume, unaware of the environmental impacts and ignorant to its detriment regardless.

One of the biggest contributors to our declining world is the textile industry, they are notorious for manufacturing cheap, plastic clothing to meet the demand of new trends and styles expected by the modern fashion consumer. This has led to the unethical phenomenon known as Fast Fashion, the problem with this business model is that the cheap clothing is often only worn for a few times then discarded due to its low quality and the latest fashion trend emerging.

The garments that are discarded often end up in landfill and they continue to eat away at the fabric of our earth, disbursing methane in their decay. Statistics from UK parliament show that. 300,000 tonnes of textile waste end up in household black bins every year, this is bad for our environment and a substantial waste as many of these garments can be re-worn or recycled into something new.

the solution

How Green Garms helps.

Green Garms wants to change consumer consciousness for the better. We will educate consumers about the unethical production and practices of the textile industry and reduce Fast Fashion consumption by encouraging consumers to make environmentally conscious shopping choices, such as the purchase of pre-loved clothing. Green Garms will also inform consumers about how to expand the usability of an existing garment by following the repair, re-wear and recycle motto.
